Created in 1837 by the Republic of Texas, the first county named for Sam Houston. Crockett, the seat, was named for Davy Crockett, who reportedly camped there on his way to the Alamo. The county is bisected by the Davy Crockett National Forest and sits on the eastern edge of the Woodbine play.
